What truffle dog training is right for me?
Whether you’re brand new to truffle hunting, looking for personalized help, or ready to take your dog into the field, there’s more than one way to learn. Three things decide it: where your dog is now, where you live, and how you like to learn.
How to choose
There isn’t one right class. There’s what’s right for you and your dog.
Truffle dog training at Truffle Dog Company runs across three formats — live online classes on Zoom, self-paced DIY truffle dog training courses you work through on your own clock, and in-person lessons and field days. The curriculum behind all of them is the same. What changes is who’s watching, when you start, and whether you need to travel.
Most people arrive knowing they want to teach their dog to find truffles and not much else. That’s fine — that’s why we’re here. Below are the three questions that help you determine what’s right for you.

Where is your dog now?
A puppy under six months old needs shorter sessions and different handling than an adolescent or adult dog. A dog who already indicates reliably on a buried truffle target is past the fundamentals and ready for outdoor work.
Age isn’t a barrier. Older dogs love this, and are often faster to train than puppies, because they’re already wise in the ways of the world.
Where do you live?
Our Live Online Classes and self-paced DIY courses can reach anyone, anywhere around the world, and be relevant to you and where you are at in your journey . Roughly one third of our students are outside the United States — including in Canada, EU, the UK, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and more.
In-person work — private lessons, advanced group classes, field days — Most of these happen in the Pacific Northwest, occuring in productive truffle locations. We are working to develop programming back east (US) and the South. Elsewhere we can connect you with local instructors, globally, who can provide field work exposure
How do you learn best?
Live classes means a start date, a small group, and an instructor watching what you and your dog are actually doing — which is usually different from what you think you’re doing.
Self-paced or DIY means you begin tonight, or when you want, repeat any lesson as many times as your dog needs.
Some individuals learn best in groups, live, for accountability. Some people know they work best one on one with an instructor. Reach out, we are here to help you figure out what option may be the best for you

For most beginners, this is the best place to start—and the format that most often leads to confident, capable working teams. Real truffles, real sites, real experience
Finding a hidden truffle or target in a controlled (or semi-controlled) setup is a different task from working through vegetation, distractions, shifting wind, uneven terrain and the genuine complexity of truffle habitat. Our advanced group classes and field days exist to get experienced teams across that gap, on producing truffle sites, with instructors alongside you to help you troubleshoot the experience.

Our self-paced DIY training program, the Foundations Course DIY, lets you begin developing truffle-hunting skills without attending scheduled classes. Work through the material when it fits, repeat lessons as needed, and spend as long as your dog needs at each stage. You can add a private lesson later if you want personalized feedback or help troubleshooting.

Truffle Puppy PreschoolAnywhere
A parallel track, not a prerequisite
A shorter program for dogs under six months old, this is our Tiny & Mighty Hunters DIY. It exists because puppies need shorter sessions and different handling, and because a few habits are far easier to build early than to fix later. It is not a prerequisite for anything — if your dog is past that age, skip it and start with the fundamentals. If you do have a young pup- this course is exceptional for getting them primed and ready to proceed with confidence and speed through the foundations courses. We strongly recommend you take this in conjunction with other local behavior training classes. This is designed as a leg up for pups and their owners who know they want to truffle hunt down the road, to establish excellent bevahiors and skills early that are needed later in hunting.

New to truffle dog training?
For most beginners, the choice comes down to two paths.
The curriculum is the same either way. What you’re really deciding is how much live support you want along the way — and that has less to do with your dog than with how comfortable you feel reading a training session, spotting what’s working, and knowing what to adjust.
Choose the Live Class if…
You want structure, live instruction, feedback on your actual dog, accoutnability that keep you moving forward week after week, and the experience of working through it alongside other teams and community. This is what we recommend for most teams starting out
Choose Self-Paced/DIY if…
You want maximum flexibility, you’ve trained a dog before in scentwork and are comforatble navigating it without feedback, and you’re comfortable watching a session and knowing what went wrong.
Choose Private Lessons if…
You’re in the Pacific Northwest (worldwide via Zoom), something specific is broken, or you’d simply rather have an instructor’s full attention than share it with a group. Also the fastest route to an honest assessment of where your team stands.

The training journey
From first scent to the forest (or farm!).
Truffle dog training is a progression. Your dog first learns that truffle scent has value. From there you build searching skills, communication, a confident indication, independence, and the ability to work through increasingly realistic environments. You don’t have to start at step one — enter wherever your dog actually is.
Not sure which step you’re on?
The clearest test: can your dog find a target (or truffle) buried 1 to 3 inches, you didn’t hide, in a place you didn’t prepare, and tell you clearly where it is? If yes, you’re at step four or beyond. If your dog only works where you set it up, you’re still in the fundamentals — and that’s the normal place to be.

Frequently asked
Is the self-paced course the same material as the live class?
The curriculum is the same. What you’re buying with the live class is feedback — we watch your dog work and tell you what actually happened, which is usually different from what you thought happened, then adjust the plan.
If you’ve trained a working dog before and you’re comfortable diagnosing your own sessions, self-paced is the better value. If this is your first, the feedback is what keeps a small error from becoming an eight-week habit.
Can I do this if I don’t live in the Pacific Northwest?
Yes, and most of our students don’t. Everything through outdoor searching is taught online, live or self-paced, and works anywhere in the world. You need a dog willing to use its nose and somewhere to hide a scent target.
Only advanced field work requires being here, because it requires standing on producing ground. If you reach that point and you’re far away, tell us — that’s a conversation about travel, not a dead end.
What breed of dog can hunt truffles?
Any breed. Truffle hunting is a scent sport, not a breed sport. What matters is food or toy motivation, a dog who recovers from mistakes without shutting down, and enough physical soundness to walk uneven ground. Mixed-breed rescues do this work as well as any purpose-bred line.
My dog is older. Is it too late?
Almost certainly not. Truffle work asks for a nose and a willingness to search, both of which age well. Older dogs often learn the indication faster than puppies because they’re already settled. Adjust session length to the body you have and the rest holds. Dogs recovering from injury and dogs with limited mobility also do well — the foundation work is low-impact and mentally demanding.
Do I need to start with Puppy Start?
No. Puppy Start is a parallel track, not a prerequisite. It exists because a dog under [age cutoff] months needs shorter sessions and different handling than an adult. If your dog is past that age, begin with the fundamentals and skip it entirely.
How long until we find a truffle?
Most teams finish the fundamentals able to work a trained scent reliably within [timeframe]. Finding a wild truffle also requires being in the right habitat in the right season, which is a separate skill taught in the outdoor and field stages.
Anyone promising you a wild find by a specific week is selling you something.
I have two dogs. Do I need to buy twice?
For self-paced material, one purchase covers your household and plenty of students bring two dogs through it. For live classes, please register each dog separately — one dog and one handler per registration is what keeps sections small enough that everyone gets real attention. Either way, train them separately: sessions with an audience go badly for both dogs.
How much practice time does this take?
Short sessions, done often, beat long ones. Most students practice ten to fifteen minutes a day, a few days a week. If you can find fifteen minutes most days, you have enough time for this.
Can I use this to train for mushrooms instead?
Yes, and many students do. The method is the same for morels, chanterelles, chaga and other fungi — you’re teaching a dog to find a specific odor and tell you about it. The habitat knowledge differs, but the dog training doesn’t.
