Foundations 3: Let’s Go Truffle Hunting
Three live Zoom sessions with instructor Victoria Gideon. The transition into the forest: large complex searches, buried hides in orchard and woodland conditions, precision alerts, and harvesting without damaging ground you’ll want to return to.
Foundations 1
Introduction to Truffle Hunting
Foundations 2
Developing a Reliable Team
Foundations 3
Let’s Go Truffle Hunting
Prerequisite: Foundations 2 with us, or equivalent training elsewhere plus instructor approval. Your dog should work truffle odor reliably in varied environments and hold a clear indication under distraction.
Coming from another program, or not sure where your team stands? Email info@truffledogcompany.com before you buy. Handlers who jump in early tend to spend this level fixing Foundations 2 problems instead of learning to work the forest.

What you’ll learn
- Large, complex open-area searches in forested settings
- Buried hides in forest and orchard conditions
- Proofing for distraction and working negative space
- Solidifying alerts for precision — and digging without damage
- Sustainable harvest practice, ripeness and truffle care
What’s included
- 3 live Zoom sessions, 75–90 minutes each, capped at 8 handlers
- Every session recorded and kept in your library
- Full Online Classroom: written instruction and video for every skill, plus habitat, ripeness and care
- Homework video review — at this level Victoria is reading terrain and handling as much as the dog
- Private class forum and direct instructor access for the run of the class
- On completion of all three levels: eligibility for in-person Field & Forest classes
- Not included: Trailhead orientation and the nine Fireside Chats are cohort-only
Before you enroll
- Check your odor supply now, not the week before class. Buried hides and open-area work use more than the earlier levels. Allow 1–2 weeks for shipping within the US, 2–3 weeks to Canada, 3–6 weeks to the EU or Australia.
- You’ll need 4 odor tins for this level. Oils available for Oregon White & Black, Périgord, Pecan, and a European Burgundy/Périgord farm blend — other species on request.
- You’ll want access to larger outdoor areas — a park, woodland, orchard or large yard. You don’t need truffle habitat.
- Allow 75–90 minutes per class night at this level.
- No prong, slip or choke collars and no e-collars are permitted in class.
- Sections cap at 8 handlers, assigned first-come. The next intake doesn’t start until the new year — Foundations 1 in January, Foundations 2 in February, Foundations 3 in March.
- Finishing this level does not mean you can independently find truffles. The woods are what no online class can hand you — that comes with field time, which is what Field & Forest classes are for.
Taking all three?
You save $210, plus Trailhead orientation, a seat held all thirteen weeks with no gaps between levels, the same classmates start to finish, nine Fireside Chats, and alumni access and Field & Forest eligibility on completion. Enroll in the cohort →
- Foundations 2 or equivalent training with instructor approval is required for this level.
- One dog and one handler per registration. Two working dogs? Please purchase two spots.
- Field & Forest eligibility requires completion of all three Foundations levels, not Foundations 3 alone.
- Completing this class does not guarantee you will find truffles. Habitat, season and field experience all matter.
- If your preferred night is full, we’ll offer you the next available section. Need to move nights later? Email us and we’ll accommodate where space allows.
- Not sure your dog is ready for this level? Email info@truffledogcompany.com — we’ll tell you honestly.
- By enrolling you agree to our Cancellation & Rescheduling Policy and COVID & Weather Policy.
