Truffle Orchard Management Workshop Refresh

Based on feedback and requests from last season’s wildly successful workshops, the Willamette Valley Truffle Company (Cartwright Truffiere) in conjunction with Truffle Dog Company invites you to attend our orchard management Refresh & Skills days held at the Cartwright Truffière.

This will be an interactive and hands-on workshop, reviewing previously addressed information from our workshops, and providing examples for specifics that may be relevant for you & your farm.  It is a la carte, so you can attend Saturday or Sunday, or both, as needed for you and your farm.

Dates: Feb 1st & Feb 2nd

Overview

This workshop is designed for orchard owners who have trees inoculated with Tuber melanosporum (Périgord truffle) (other species welcome too) AND who previously attended our Truffiere Management workshops. If you have not previously attended our workshops but are interested in these skills days (ex: you are a truffle dog handler curious about how Truffle orchards function), space may be available. Please contact us to be on our list for available spots before signing up. It is understood that by attending this workshop you have a foundational knowledge of Truffle farming, or some experience in truffle farming as we will not be addressing the basics of truffle farming and truffiere management. This is considered an advanced-level refresher/ skills conference.

If you are just getting started, we encourage you to attend our Dec 7 & 8th Workshop, which will be more appropriate.

About the workshop

Day 1

Day 1 we will explore new information learned from the past year and address questions about your farms, and areas of interest. This is a follow up and refresh from what you learned at the workshop. It is understood that we will not be going over the fundamentals discussed at the previous workshop or introductory-level material. This is considered an advanced workshop for growers looking to improve yields. Once registered, we’ll ask for submission from you on anything particular to your farm you’d like to know more about or had trouble with this past year.

Day 2

This will focus on truffle harvesting and will be centered around dogs, harvesting, cleaning, grading, and packaging.

If you are looking to get your own dog out on a producing truffle orchard, please contact Alana directly for available dates and any prerequisites required before this consideration. Client dogs will not be allowed on the property for this workshop.

During this event you will have the opportunity to practice your own harvesting skills and practice cleaning and grading techniques.

About your Hosts/ Presenters

Simon and Linnet Cartwright – Owners and operators of Cartwright Truffiere since 2007. Cartwright truffiere is one of Oregon’s oldest-producing orchards finding our first truffle on a 5-year-old oak in 2014. In January 2016 it provided the Grit restaurant in Eugene with the first commercial Perigord truffle ever produced in the PNW. Since then, production has continued to increase with the orchard providing truffle to the PNW region and further abroad, (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Texas etc.). In 2019, the Willamette Valley Truffle Company was launched to provide coaching services and marketing assistance to other small farms in the PNW.

You can see more of their story here

Alana McGee- Owner Truffle Dog Company. Alana has been involved in the truffle industry since 2008, and has been leading the way helping growers teach their own dogs to hunt for truffles as well as supplying establishments with both native and European species of truffles. Based in Seattle, WA, Alana and the team at Truffle Dog Co. are active in their support of the domestic wild truffle industry (with their own teams and dogs harvesting wild truffles), as well as providing canine detection services and surveys for truffieres. Alana works to help growers establish Culinary & Agritourism programs, facilitating business planning and go-to-market strategies tailored to farms’ specific needs. Alana’s expertise is canine scent detection training specifically for the domestic truffle industry as well as harvesting practices and commercialization/ go-to-market for truffle orchards.
