Truffle Orchard Management Workshop (Beginner & Intermediate)

One & one 1/2 day Workshop: NOVEMBER 2023

The Willamette Valley Truffle Company (Cartwright Truffiere) in conjunction with Truffle Dog Company invites you to attend one of our two proposed beginner and intermediate orchard management conferences held at the Cartwright Truffiere located in Cottage Grove Oregon.

Overview

This workshop is designed for orchard owners who have trees inoculated with Tuber melanosporum (Périgord truffle) and need to create a roadmap for managing their orchard in order to bring it from planting to production. All material will be at a beginner to intimidate hobby farmer level. While other methods will be discussed the workshop will be centered around the Australian method adapted for North American conditions and takes into consideration the time and cost constraints associated with small-scale farming.

About the workshop

Day 1

It is expected that on the first day we will explore the life cycle of Perigord truffle and its implications for month-by-month farming practices in order to produce commercial grade truffle. We will discuss the time and costs associated with each part of the process along with the pitfalls that have been encountered along the way. We will spend time in the orchard, which is a combination of Filbert and Oak with a varying age of 9-14 yrs allowing for discussion on various pruning techniques etc.

Day 2 (half day)

This will focus on truffle season and will be centered around dogs (what type, training, handler expectations, own or hire a team etc.) harvesting, cleaning, grading and going to market.

About your Hosts/ Presenters

Simon and Linnet Cartwright – Owners and operators of Cartwright Truffiere since 2007. Cartwright truffiere is one of Oregon’s oldest-producing orchards finding our first truffle on a 5-year-old oak in 2014. In January 2016 it provided the Grit restaurant in Eugene with the first commercial Perigord truffle ever produced in the PNW. Since then, production has continued to increase with the orchard providing truffle to the PNW region and further abroad, (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Texas etc.). In 2019, the Willamette Valley Truffle Company was launched to provide coaching services and marketing assistance to other small farms in the PNW.
