October 6, 2014 at 5:57 am #2864LucindaParticipantHi, hooray – we made it this far!
I live in Kent, South East England and am hoping to train Tally (half Labrador, half springer spaniel, aged nearly 3) to find truffles in our woodland – we are one of Paul Thomas’ woodland owners – and are ready to start training. I have done the Kennel Club UK bronze and silver levels but they were over a year ago now and we’ve been a bit too relaxed with training since then. tally is always keen to please and responds well but I need to concentrate on my consistency with her. We have 3 children so she’s in a busy environment and is a very friendly dog. I’m determined to get this right but am a bit of a technophobe …..
Here goes!October 6, 2014 at 1:26 pm #2865Alana McGeeKeymasterYou’ll do great! Just let us know how we can help and we can help you through the technology aspect of it! It’s not so hard once you get the hang of it! Just don’t forget to check back. You can click the little box at the bottom of the reply box that says “notify me of follow up replies via email” to make sure you see it when we write something in your forum!
Looking forward to helping you and Tally along!

November 15, 2014 at 7:09 am #3088LucindaParticipantHi Alana,
Sorry for the radio silence – we ran out of truffles and took a break before going back to the beginning.
We are doing the box hides and some days this seems good and other days Tally is totally not getting the idea – please can you tell me how much truffle I should be using? I have some in the freezer and do not know how much truffle to hide in the boxes. Tally was fine on the scent implanting but a few days later didn’t respond at all – could this be because the truffle was “off”? I will send you a video – probably tomorrow!
Thanks LucindaNovember 17, 2014 at 1:36 pm #3176Alana McGeeKeymasterHi Lucinda.
It’s nice to virtually meet you. We would love to see some video of you and Tally so we can provide some feedback. Can you show us a short clip of scent imprinting and a short clip of the box hides? As for how much truffle to use, you can use just a small piece (size of a pea or a bit bigger). Place that in your scent tin and put the tin in the box.
November 30, 2014 at 8:08 am #3732LucindaParticipantHi there – please can you try to give me some instruction on how to send you the video of Tally and the indoor Box Hides? If I click on the little box above this text box it will only let me upload a picture – not a video. Sorry – I’m technically backward AND I’m doing it all from an ipad as our pc died a sudden death a week ago. We are replacing it but the new one won’t be working for a week or so….. We have just completed lesson two…..
thanks

You will need to click on the little icon that says youtube- try that.
In order for that to work though you?ll need to upload the video to youtube for us to see it.
Another free video hosting service is Vimeo.com. You will need to create an account on either site, but once you do you will see a button somewhere large that says ?upload!?. Click on that and follow the instructions for uploading.
It may take a bit of time for your video to upload depending on your internet connection and the size of the file, but don?t worry! It should be fairly straightforward.
Once it is uploaded share the link with us (or web address) and then we can see it.
It should be pretty easy to do from an iPad, but Kristin may be able to speak more to that as she uses her iPad for many things.
If you are still having trouble uploading the video to either vimeo or youtube let us know and we can try to walk you through the process.
We look forward to seeing it.

We have graded your quiz as well. Let us know if you have difficulties getting the video online. We are excited to see & Tally!
December 1, 2014 at 1:52 pm #3738LucindaParticipantHi Alana,
I think I’ve managed to create a you tube account and the above link should take you to our basic box hides. If this doesn’t work I’ll have to email it to you….
Onto lesson three …. Feeling ready!

Good Tally- look at that tail. Love it. That will be a good indicator for you later I think.
Nice delivery and in general very good timing clicking on rewarding at source. At 0:27 when she goes back to the flower pot, reward again for that.
I know you guys have been practicing out in the field prior to starting this program, but if we were walking you through it as we would anyone from the beginning, we would say, build as much value as you can at the source. If Tally wants to be greedy and keep alerting there for a few seconds- let her, and reward her for that persistence. So reward each nose touch. It may seem excessive now, but eventually you will fade it.
When you clicked again in the 2nd time after the initial alert one you should have rewarded her again there. I?m just being picky 🙂 But the more you can get her to engage at source and stay there, the better!
At 0:37 was there a truffle in that box as well? based on you going back to it again, I am going to assume there was- Please correct me if I am wrong there.
So there were 2 truffles out in this scenario correct?
Same comment applies to the one truffle hidden inside the yellow margarine container. Tally re-alerted on it once. Try to capture those moments and reward those as well.
Well done though!

Hi Alana,
We’ve just filmed the latest episode with Tally there are a couple of differences to our normal session – in that when she tried to sniff out the box on the table I wasn’t ready for her and didn’t click in time.
Also, we’re a little unsure whether she’s sniffing every box and putting her paw on it in hope or because she “gets it”….
We’re loving doing this and worried about the timescale with a full on family Christmas between us and our deadline!
Best wishes,
LucindaDecember 18, 2014 at 10:38 pm #3777Alana McGeeKeymasterHi Lucinda. Just graded your quiz! For some reason it isn’t emailing me when you post- but making a note to check daily. Will check your video momentarily. You quiz answers were very thoughtful and well answered 🙂
